Plot: 4/5
Duckett & Dyer follows Michael Duckett and Stephanie Dyer as they enter into a mysterious situation of having started a detective agency, except neither of them actually started it. Of course, if someone starts a detective agency for you, there’s absolutely no reason to not go along with it. And if you go along with a mysteriously started detective agency, of course you’re going to find yourself learning about theoretical physics and the multiverse close up and personal.

This felt like a story that targeted me. The humor, the ridiculousness, I just loved it so much. It does feel at times like it’s meandering without real purpose until everything starts to line back up. It can feel a little like it’s not going anywhere in particular, but the book’s not long and every moment features something fun and interesting to keep your attention until it all comes together at the end! I think it’s a relatively small issue compared to the entertainment value of giant people-eating hamburgers.

Characters: 5/5
I would die for Stephanie Dyer. I would also kill her if she was my real life roommate. The pairing of her with Michael Duckett leads to some excellent moments, both hilarious and emotional (yes this story’s not just jokes, there’s some great emotional moments between friends). With an excellent leading pair, G.M. Nair has also constructed a wonderful supporting cast of other characters.

Worldbuilding: 5/5
The main story exists in the real world, so to speak, so the worldbuilding really fleshes out once we get glimpses at the different universes. And, I can say without a doubt, it flourishes well with G.M. Nair’s excellent humor. We get unique and interesting worlds that put our protagonists in hilarious situations (have I mentioned the giant people-eating hamburger yet?).

Writing: 5/5
The humor is the strength of this story, and G.M. Nair nails it; just about every chapter had something for me to laugh about. Plenty of emotion was baked into the story revolving around the Duckett & Dyer friendship, and overall it was very well written.

Enjoyability: 5/5
This book hit me just right. I loved the ridiculous moments, the emotional moments, the very idea all together. And it wrapped up into something excellent that makes me excited to continue on with the story. I loved this book and look forward to returning to Duckett & Dyer in the near future!
